I found out about the author, Ludo, from an article about his blog and was excited that he had just put out a book. I think I've only been in maybe four cabs in my life, so this was an educational read!
There are some good laughs in this book, but it's also got deep moments that feel completely organic and make the whole thing an even better read. Other reviewers have said it already, but the characters feel real and three-dimensional, and some parts tugged on my heart strings a bit.
Keep writing, Ludo!
As a cabbie form the fairer side of the pond, I can say this book is the absolute dog's bollocks! I was in tears as I cackled at the stories of how blinkered the chaps this poor cabbie had to drive around were. And by the Queen's leathery arse, I recommend you read this book and then try to tell me you didn't laugh your todger off!
The hilarious tales from this OC cabbie brought me back to my days as a young bloke driving around fares who were more often than not likely to takes the biscuits or take the mickey in my car. And the worst part was that these wankers left you with sod all for a tip. Much sympathy to my American counterpart in the taxi trade and I wish him all the success! Do yourself a solid and get this book.
A definite must read. Ludo's stories will have you laughing out loud. This book is an excellent quick read and every single short story is told in an engaging way. The stories told are too good to be made up. One of the funniest books I've read in a long time, if you need a quick read you won't be disappointed.
This is the perfect book to take along during a car ride or a business trip. Each story is easy to read and entertaining on its own, and all the stories are masterfully tied together by the cabbie's sardonic wit. I'd highly recommend reading this. Even if you are a busy law student (which the author once was), you will find that it is a wonderful respite from the dense assigned reading in the casebooks.
This book is somewhere between four and five stars, but it's overwhelming reception require, for the sake of balance, a four. It's a collection of stories, an episodic recounting with Mr. Ludo as the narrator. Stylistically speaking, it's in the same vein as the straight man in a joke duo the narrator tells stories in a fairly straight-forward manner as all kinds of ridiculousness happens around him drunken antics, pepper spraying, layer cake theft, mag-light violence. I laughed enough times that people asked what I was really doing on my kindle.
What was surprising, or at least unexpected, was just how human the people are. In few words, the writer sketches out people that are ridiculous in a way that is nonetheless believable. Peter, the mag-light-wielding driver, is the funniest person in the book, but I never had the sense that Mr. Ludo had created a caricature. I found myself caring a surprising amount about cabbies, even if I'm not sure I'll ever want to tip them again.
If you ever wondered what kind of shenanigans cab drivers have to deal with, or just want an afternoon laughing hard enough people wonder what you're really doing, I'd give Keep the Meter Running a chance.
Saw this new book in the top 35 kindle books list for humorous essays, and I thought it might be erotic short stories about cab sex based on the cover art and just had to buy. I had my member out and was ready with a bottle of Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer (also bought w Prime) when I started flipping through on my kindle. Not what I initially expected, though I did have a fairly satisfactory ending following the Tito Ortiz story. What I found instead was a collection of well-written stories that were hilarious. Martin Ludo is a masterful story teller, and he does it with such ease and poise and vulgarity that I can't stop reading. I can't wait for the next book!
I loved Ludo's book. The characters are vibrant and they're just insane enough to be believable--especially Peter. Ludo has a great conversational style to his writing that makes his stories easy to read but still exciting and engaging. This book is like that show Taxicab Confessions, but doesn't suck. Ludo's observations are insightful and I really felt like I was riding in the passenger seat of his yellow cab from page 1.
